The Derry turnover is the afternoon snack we all deserve right now
OVER THE PAST few weeks, we’ve been throwing a spotlight on some delicious delicacies from around Ireland. Today, it’s the Derry turnover’s time to shine.
You may think you know what a turnover is, but you have no idea.
What is a turnover, then?
Derry turnovers consist of a diamond shaped, croissant-like pastry, filled with jam and drizzled with icing.
Like their cousins the Belfast ‘fifteens’, they’re the perfect with your mid-morning or afternoon tea – but Derry people don’t discriminate when it comes to what meal they’re eaten for.

You can also choose to add a bit of butter to the mix, but it’s entirely up to you.
Where do you get them?

Three bakeries in Derry city are noted for their excellent turnovers: Doherty’s on Foyle Street, the City Home Bakery on Sackville Street, and the Leprechaun on Clooney Terrace.
With prices starting at 40p, they’re a cheap and tasty treat.
Doherty’s even make giant turnovers to order, in case one regular-sized one isn’t enough
It’s never enough. According to the Derry Journal, they’re often ordered in the place of birthday cakes. Such is the turnover’s allure.

And Derry folk crave them something fierce
And who can blame them? We won’t be happy until we have one in each paw.
